Part 1: Project Purpose and Meaning
Hanoi-Amsterdam High School (HN-AMS) is one of the most public prestigious high schools in Hanoi. Since its establishment in 1985 with financial supports from the Amsterdam people, HN-AMS has become the top academic center for talented students in Hanoi and also from other parts of Vietnam.
Apart from HN-AMS’s main mission in sustaining and improving HN-AMS’s first-rate educational qualities, upgrading and maintaining HN-AMS’s infrastructure is an urgent requirement. To commemorate HN-AMS’s 20th year anniversary, HN-AMS, in collaboration with Hanoi Amsterdam Organization (HAO), has decided to implement a project named “HN-AMS’s front gate design and construction”.
This project is meaningful. The re-construction of the school’s gate will give a new face to HN-AMS, and is consistent with the expanding scale and the 20-year acclaimed tradition in terms of education. The inauguration of this project will serve as a momentous opening in celebrating HN-AMS’s 20th anniversary.
Part 2: Project Overview
Project Name: ‘Design and construction of Hanoi-Amsterdam High School’s front gate’
Funding Organizations: Hanoi-Amsterdam High School and Hanoi-Amsterdam Organization
Project Implementation Organizations: Hanoi-Amsterdam High School and Hanoi-Amsterdam Organization
Project Scale: the project comprises of two stages: • front gate designing competition, and • front gate construction.
1. HN-AMS’s front gate design competition:
a. Purpose: To seek the best design that is compatible with school’s surroundings and consistent with the school’s scale and tradition. In addition, the design must be practical, i.e. the newly-constructed gate must be able to accommodate daily traffic.
b. Who is eligible to participate:
The competition is open to all teachers, current students and alumni/alumnae and any other interested people.
c. Entry requirements:
• The design should include the model of the gate, the surrounded wall, and the security office. • The design can be drawn by hand or with computer, and should be presented with detailed explanatory legend on a piece of A3 (30cm x 42cm) paper. • There should be a brief explanation with respect to designing idea, constructing materials, and approximate costs of the project. • Please write clearly the name of the author, home and business address, high school class and class year.
d. Prizes:
• First prize: 5,000,000VND • Second prize: 2,000,000VND • Third prize: 1,000,000VND In addition, the design contract will be signed with the first prize winner. Design fees will be calculated in accordance with current laws of Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
e. Evaluation committee:
The school will collect and display all entries to open a public poll, together with two architect advisors from Vietnam’s University of Architecture and Vietnamese Architects’ Association.
f. Time duration:
• 05/09/2004 -> 10/09/2004: The school will provide necessary information for the designing competition (i.e. measurement specifications). • 15/09/2004 -> 15/11/2004: All entries will be put in a sealed box placed in the school. • 25/12/2004: Announce the competition result.
g. Notes:
• Copyrights of all designs belong to Hanoi-Amsterdam High School. • Images of the school’s current gate and designs can be downloaded from http://www.hn-ams.org/duan/congtruong. 2. Front gate construction:
a. Purpose:
To construct the front gate according to the best design in preparation for HN-AMS’s 20th year anniversary.
b. Time duration: • 25/12/2004 -> 01/02/2005: bidding companies will submit a detailed project including estimated completion time. • 15/06/2005 -> 15/08/2005: project implementation (i.e. front gate construction)
c. Contractor:
The first prize winner of the design competition will be the first choice. Suggestions from designers are highly important.
Technology and technical specifications
1. Design competition:
Ensure that the design is consistent with the school’s size and tradition; meet technical standards regarding to daily traffic and durability. The design has to include the front gate, fence, security quarter with view to the school ground and parking area.
2. Front gate construction:
Construction of the front gate is based on the best design, and ensures durability and compatibility with surroundings as well as reasonable costs.
Project Timeline:
Stage 1: 15/09/2004 – 25/12/2004: design competition
Stage 2: 25/12/2004 – 15/02/2004: construction proposal, accounting paperwork “hach toan kinh phi”
Stage 3: 15/06/2005 – 15/08/2005: construction implementation
Funds: from current students, alumni/alumnae, parents and other individuals and organizations.
