Vietnam climbs ladder in business environment ranking

Vietnam is expected to rank as the 50th best place to do business in 2005-09 period compared to 54th in 2001-05 based on business environment, according to a major economics survey.
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) survey has Denmark topping the list, relegating Canada and the United States to the second and third place. The EIU is the business information arm of The Economist Group, publisher of The Economist, which was announced it its press release Mar. 30.
Denmark assumes the top spot for the first time, displacing Canada, which had previously been ranked as the most attractive global location for investment.
The country's liberalization policies of recent years mean that Denmark's labor market receives a high score for its increasingly flexible, as well as highly educated workforce.
Denmark also benefits from a more transparent tax regime, and local government reforms that will serve to increase efficiency and reduce pressure on the central government.
Singapore and Hong Kong, which are expected to be the best places in Asia in the 2005-09 period, rank the fourth and fifth respectively in the survey.
East Asia will remain the most attractive region for investment among emerging markets, as most countries in the region have either consolidated or improved their positions.
The ranking, conducted every five years, is based on 10 categories, including the political and institutional environment, macroeconomic stability, policy towards private enterprise, foreign investment policy, financing and infrastructure.
The Economist Intelligence Unit's global business ranking model is applied to the world's 60 largest countries, which account for more than 95% of global output, trade and FDI.
