80 overseas Vietnamese youths to join Vietnam trip

Eighty young overseas Vietnamese will visit and learn more about their home country in a transnational summer camp trip from July 9 to 25. According to Nguyen Minh Ha, interim manager of the Culture and Information Department under the Overseas Vietnamese Committee, overseas Vietnamese youths from all over the world between ages 13 and 22 will enjoy free eating, traveling and accommodation expenses. According to the itinerary, the trip will start from north of the country down to the south. The trip aims to provide the young generation of Vietnamese living abroad the chance to learn about Vietnam’s history, culture and lifestyle. The group will visit Vietnam’s most famous tourist and historical venues including King Hung Temple, Ha Long Bay and the World Heritage sites of Hue city, My Son Holy Land and Hoi An town. This year, we received 181 applications from 18 countries and territories, much higher than last year’s numbers, said Mr. Ha. There were even applicants from Spain, where the Vietnamese population is only 104, he added. But, due to financial difficulties, the Committee of Overseas Vietnamese was only able to select 80 youths, said Mr. Ha. In 2004, 92 young overseas Vietnamese from 22 countries and territories participated in the program.
