Vietnam among world’s top three in Internet growth

Vietnam ranked third globally in Internet growth in the last four years, a survey released at the World Summit on the Information Society in Tunisia Thursday said.
The survey, conducted by the UK’s Government for the Third Millennium, put Vietnam behind Sudan and Guinea with a robust increase of 27.48% in user numbers during the period.

Foreign experts at the summit hailed Vietnam’s efforts after the survey found 7.2% of the country’s population used the Internet frequently.

Vietnamese Minister of Post and Telecoms Do Trung Ta, in a report at the summit, attributed the achievements to the country’s efforts to become an information society.

He pointed out that 98% of Vietnam was connected by telephone lines.

Putting forth his country’s views on Internet governance, Ta said governments should play an important role to ensure network security.

The summit, held November 16-18, marked the second phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).

The first phase was hosted by the Swiss government in Geneva in late 2003, where 175 countries adopted a Declaration of Principles and Plan of Action.

In the second phase, delegates discussed measures to implement the Plan of Action and set up working groups to find solutions and reach agreements in the fields of Internet governance and financing mechanisms.
