Having heard about her for long, I finally had a chance to meet Dinh Vu Trang Ngan (A1 95-98) during my visit to Boston recently. Agile, joyful, caring and enthusiastic, she is truly what I had imagined. Ngan has a long record of academic and extracurricular achievements, including her excellent performance at Hanoi Amsterdam high school, her involvement at The Pacific Ocean Youth Meeting in Japan and her full-ride scholarship to attend Bates College.

Three years ago, as a student at Hanoi-Amsterdam high school, I had a chance to watch Le Minh Duc performing a Linkin Park’s song. “That girl has something”, I said to myself. I was very impressed not only by the way she sang, but also by the way she talked and dressed. And I know I had not got the wrong impression when my friend and I were asked to interview Duc three years later.

Nguyen Xuan Son was well-known among students of 93 – 96 school year with two consecutive Silver Medals in International Competition in Physics: 94 - 95 in Australia and 95 – 96 in Norway. That was the story of ten years ago. The boy named Son – a brilliant student of class L1 those days – has graduated from Polytechnique, a renowned university in France, and is currently having job in finance sector in London. After 7 years of living and studying in France, Son decided to leave this country and challenge himself in another environment- London. The road from Vietnam to France, and then to London certainly is not a plain one. We now turn back the clock hands to when he was trying to make up his mind.
